The Everglades
The everglades, sometimes referred to as the "river of grass", is one of Florida's best known diverse ecosystems. The everglades are a subtropical wetland with significant biodiversity importance. Although described mainly as a swamp it actually acts more like a slow moving river. It provides habitats for wildlife, plants, and micro-organisms. It is a two million acre wetland that reaches from central Florida to the south of Florida Bay. It was established as a national park in 1947 to preserve the biological diversity and resources of its ecosystems. Originally inhabited by the Calusa Indians, the everglades is still home to a smaller number of humans.
